A swimmer can be capable of performing well at any point in their menstrual cycle. What matters in day-to-day coaching is how the individual is actually feeling and whether symptoms are affecting safe, effective participation.
Avoid blanket cycle rules
Do not assume:
- every swimmer is weaker during a period;
- everyone needs a low-intensity session at the same cycle phase;
- an app can tell you exactly how a swimmer will perform;
- a poor session must be caused by menstruation.
Individuals vary, and symptoms can vary from one period to another.
Adapt when symptoms justify it
A swimmer with cramps, headache, unusual fatigue or heavy bleeding may benefit from:
- a short break;
- reduced intensity;
- extra recovery;
- a technique-focused set;
- finishing early.
The adjustment should be based on symptoms, not a stereotype.
Safety comes first in the water
If a swimmer is faint, dizzy, very unwell or unable to concentrate safely, get them out of the water and follow first-aid procedures.
Do not use competition pressure to override a genuine safety concern.
Competition planning
Before a gala, check practical needs:
- period-product access;
- toilet and changing access;
- current swimwear rules;
- enough time between events to change products;
- a named adult the swimmer can approach.
Those changes often matter more than altering the training plan.
Talk about readiness, not assumptions
Questions such as "How are you feeling today?" and "Is there anything we need to adjust?" work for all athletes and avoid making menstruation a sign of reduced capability.
Record performance carefully
If you notice repeated patterns of fatigue, pain, injury or missed periods, raise the welfare concern appropriately. Do not diagnose the cause from a training spreadsheet.
Remember
Good coaching is individualised.
Respond to symptoms and readiness; do not prescribe a universal menstrual-cycle training plan.
