You do not need to be a period expert to be a supportive coach.
For many young players, football is one of the places where periods can feel most difficult to manage. Training and matches can mean tight kit, limited toilet breaks, changing rooms, long tournament days and sometimes having to ask an adult for help.
A calm, practical response from a coach can make a big difference.
What might a player be dealing with?
A player may be:
- waiting for their first period to start
- having their first few periods, which can be irregular at first
- worried about leaking through their kit
- experiencing cramps, headaches, tiredness or feeling unwell
- unsure which period product works for them
- embarrassed about asking to use the toilet
- worried about raising period concerns with a coach
- experiencing symptoms that are affecting school, sleep or sport
Not every player will feel the same, and the same player may feel different from one period to another.
Your role as a coach
Your role is to listen, support and signpost.
You can:
- make toilet and changing access easy
- respond calmly if a player leaks
- keep emergency period products available
- offer privacy
- allow a short break when needed
- involve a parent or carer appropriately
- encourage healthcare advice when symptoms are worrying or regularly affecting normal life
You do not need to diagnose the cause of period pain, heavy bleeding, dizziness or other symptoms.
Keep it normal, but keep it private
Periods are normal. That does not mean a player should have to discuss their period in front of the team.
Avoid turning periods into a joke, announcing why a player has left training, or asking for more personal information than you need.
A good approach is simple:
“No problem. Take the time you need. Let me know if you need anything.”
If you remember only three things
- Believe the player when they say they need help.
- Protect their privacy and dignity.
- Know when the issue needs a parent, carer or healthcare professional.
