Puberty, Sports Bras & Football Kit

Comfort, kit and body confidence as players grow.

Periods are only one part of puberty. A player's breasts, hips, height, body hair, skin and body shape may all be changing while they play football.

For some young players, football kit and changing rooms can make those changes feel more noticeable.

Focus on comfort, not appearance

If a player says their kit is rubbing, uncomfortable or making them self-conscious, listen and look for a practical solution.

Do not comment on breast size, body shape or physical development unless there is a genuine welfare need and the conversation is handled appropriately.

Sports bras matter

A well-fitting sports bra can improve comfort during running, jumping and changing direction. Coaches do not need to fit bras, but they can make players and parents aware that appropriate support matters.

England Football's Female Health Hub includes sports-bra guidance and fit information for players who want more detail.

Changing-room culture matters too

Make sure team culture respects privacy. Body-based teasing, sexual comments and humiliating behaviour should never be normalised.
